Pumpkins & Cherries

Do not worry, this is not a recipe that combines the two. Simply a post which speaks of some memories through the years as we begin to think of Fall which leads to Thanksgiving, which leads to memories of some of my greatest things to be thankful.(remember that women’s brains are like spaghetti and one thought leads to another) Most of those memories are probably the same as some of yours, health, protection, provision and seeing God’s Hand of faithfulness in our lives, no matter our circumstances. But then there are other things, Things that might not seem like blessings at the time, but have filled my heart with joy through the years. When I bought that pretty little pitcher, it never dawned on me the joy of memories I would have from serving so many from it.

As I washed my little pitcher this morning to make ice tea for the day, some memories came flooding back to me. Randy and I had just been married a short time when he decided to take me to my first Cracker Barrel. Yes, I was 46 and had never eaten at a Cracker Barrel, I know, and I call myself a Southern Girl. Thank goodness, I kept that a secret for a long time. But, here we were walking in and giving our name to the hostess when we were informed that it would be about 30 minutes before she could seat us. That didn’t bother me one iota. There, now you can tell I really am Southern. As my eyes quickly darted around the salesroom, it was all I could do to contain myself and tell Randy that instead of eating here, could I just spend the money I was going to spend on pancakes for some of the goodies that was quickly calling my name. My eyes landed on the most precious little pitcher with cherries painted all over it with a red lid. Randy quickly realized that we would not be leaving without this quaint little pitcher. That was 22 years ago and it is still the pitcher we use every day for tea. It is one of those little treasures that I wrap ever so carefully with each move we make. As I think back about the people that have poured tea out of that pitcher, it brings back so many precious memories of so many different folks we have had in our homes. As Randy and I close our devotion and prayer time each day, we close with the same scripture prayer,
“O Lord, that you would bless us indeed, that you would enlarge our territory, that Your Hand would be upon us, that we would not cause pain.” I Chronicles 4:10. And bless us, He has. Our different moves to different parts of the country have certainly enlarged our territory and given us so many friends, of whom, continue to bless our lives.

This week has been the designated week which we pull out the Fall Decor and hope that as the pumpkins adorn our tables, the temps will get the hint and begin to “fall”. It got the hint. It is only 103 today instead of 106. Ah…the magic of pumpkins. But once again, as I place the pumpkins and foliage around the house, different memories come that make me realize how truly blessed we are. As I think back to last year and the year before, trying to remember just how and where I placed the different pumpkins, it is impossible to not think about how God showed Himself faithful to us this past year. Have I taken the time to just thank Him for the strength to do what I am doing this week? Have I thanked Him for the memory of knowing where the pumpkins are suppose to go. Do I take for granted the fact that I can get out of bed and walk to the kitchen and make pumpkin muffins? Do I give thanks for friends who drop by to share a new recipe with me for pumpkin cake?

We all have so much to be thankful. As we place each pumpkin out this year, why not pause and give thanks for blessings that comes to mind. Then, after you finish decorating, sit with a glass of tea and write a note or text to someone who has been a blessing to your life. Remember, “life is just a bowl of cherries” and lets add this year, “each day, give Him thanks for His Faithfulness and blessings to our lives, no matter how small.”

Fall Fettish

I have a problem. Hello, my name is Trudy and I’m a pumpkinholic! Randy is getting a little worried now. It seems that I simply cannot pass up a pumpkin, real or not. When we went again (yes, yesterday was our second trip to storage to find the missing box of more Fall decor, which I knew had my pumpkin that said, “Happy Fall Ya’ll” in it) to storage to find some missing pieces which I knew we had just overlooked last Saturday on our first trip to load boxes of Fall stuff. Sorry, but we are way beyond calling it Fall Decor and am now to the point that it has become “stuff”. It all started out being called my “Seasonal Treasure Boxes, now it’s called, “just more stuff”, as per Peter Pumpkin. I reminded him that since we no longer have a house phone to change our voice mail message to Peter and Penelope Pumpkin, he could at least be a little more sensitive to my need to fill our home with pumpkins, spices and everything nice, which in my thinking is more pumpkins.

So, realizing that we don’t have what we need to make my Fall Glass block with lights, we are off to Hobby Lobby this morning to find lights and another tree for the perfect Fall Tree to adorn our Arizona Room. After rummaging through the 40 or so boxes yesterday in storage, we found only half of the tree. Randy agreed that since it was over 10 years old, he would break down and buy me another tree. After all, who doesn’t need 3 Fall trees in their house? I told him that Peter Pumpkin needed a attitude adjustment. Besides, we don’t have room now for 3, only 2, so he could quit with the sarcasm.

Assuring him that I would call the help line as soon as I finished decorating, he began to help me put up the Fall wreath, put the lights on the Fall tree  we already have and even helped wash our Fall Pumpkin plates, and then handed me the phone.

Boy, will he be surprised when our T-shirts arrive with our names, Peter & Penelope printed around  a pumpkin on the front. Hope it gets here in time to wear to my support group.

Pumpkins and Frappe

Fall is in the air, fa la la la la! The white shoes are put away and the matches are sitting upon the mantel, just waiting for the weather to drop below 100 so we can lite the fireplace.  In the meantime, I will perk myself up by stopping by Starbucks and guzzling down a pumpkin spice frappe. September is that month when we really don’t know what to wear or what table decorations to use. It’s still hot to where we are needing to still wear our shorts and sandals, but because we know it is September, our minds automatically just think pumpkins and pies, fireplaces and lattes. It just seems weird to walk into Hobby Lobby to see if there is any new fall decorations that I just can’t live without in shorts and sandals. If it is like the past 60 years, I’m sure that there will be some that I just cannot walk away from. So to truly get in the spirit of Fall, I turn down the air conditioning in the house and car and get out a new fall outfit, stop and buy a Pumpkin Spice Frappe (since I cannot make myself drink anything hot until it is below 50) and head to see just what new shapes and colors of pumpkins they are selling this year.  Peter Pumpkin, (Randy’s name from Sept 1 through Thanksgiving), doesn’t know it yet, but I am thinking about having a pumpkin carved to look like him. I think he will be excited to see himself sitting right outside the front door, with “welcome ya’ll” carved at the top of his face. Things like this just get him so excited about the holidays. He will be thrilled to know that this is the weekend we go to storage to find all our fall treasures.

Last year, if you remember reading (Labor Day in Big Bear) it took us 3 trips to bring home all the treasures that are stored. We have since bought a little bigger car than the two seater, so hopefully we can make it in one trip.
This time last year, we were recovering from hiking down a mountain on Labor Day. Since that time, we have learned to go to Big Bear with “imaginary illness” that would not allow us such hideous activity and also “forgetting” the required shoes it takes to hike. Because of this new wisdom of ours, we actually did a little resting yesterday, instead of participating in something that would require knee surgery or a hip replacement, we sat and watched golf or read. We are learning. We are slow, and it takes us awhile, but we now know how to get out of things we don’t like to do. Lie and fake illnesses. Works every time.
In case you are wanting to drive your adult kids crazy (more than normal), do what we do. We record a really stupid message on our answering machine. It will keep them from calling so much, because they are afraid if we aren’t home, they will have to listen once again to…
“Hello, you have reached Peter and Penelope Pumpkin. Peter is hunting pumpkins and gourds and I’m shopping for s’mores, we’ll give you a call when we walk through the door”. Trust me on this, it will drive them crazy.

Gathering Friends

A few years ago, my sister-in-law gave me a beautiful book entitled The Gathering of Friends, which I keep out at all times. Not only are the pictures on each page beautiful, but the recipes themselves are recipes that just speak the word “home” when you read them,. At the front of the book on the first page it reads, “When someone comes to your home and sits at your table and breaks bread with you, your relationship is forever changed.”

I reread that this morning while searching for this recipe and it was a gentle reminder that as the fall season approaches, while gathering pumpkins to grace decorated tables or gathering just the perfect recipes to set before our families, I want to set a goal to gather more than material things. As time goes faster and schedules get more hectic. let’s take some time to “gather a new friend” and add them to our lives. The food, the decorations and the house will be so much sweeter.

Taken from The Gathering of Friends…

One of our favorite breads to have with soups and salads is Parmesan Toast. It is quick and easy and tastes great no matter what season you serve it.

1/2 cup mayo

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup parmesan cheese

1 loaf of French Bread

Slice bread to desired thickness. Blend the mayo, butter and Parmesan. Spread on bread slices and broil till golden.
